DLST/ MAED (Language Studies) programs have new nomenclature

Starting First Semester of school year 2007-2008, the Faculty of Education Diploma and MAEd programs on Language Studies for Teachers will carry the title Diploma/MA in Education major in Language and Literacy Education, with the program codes DLLE and MAEd (LLE), respectively. Its renaming was done to make the label more appropriate to the goals and structures of the programs.

The programs have been primarily designed for professionals who work in all areas of language and literacy education such as school based literacy education, adult literacy, teaching English as a second Language and bilingual education.

The UPOU has been offering the Diploma in Language Studies for Teachers and Master of Arts in Education programs since 1997 and 2001, respectively. They seek to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to critically analyze debates about literacy curriculum and teaching and to make a practical contribution to the development of quality teaching practices and education policy in the field. The courses are designed to equip literacy educators with the critical skills and knowledge to address the challenges of teaching literacy in new and challenging times. To date, the programs have a total of 268 alumni – 263 under the diploma program and 5 under the master's program.

UP President Emerlinda R. Roman approved the renaming of the program on 16 August 2007 (Rhonna Marie R. Vereña, FEd).
